An Attic black vase by the Leagros Group led Christie’s much anticipated Antiquities sale on April 25.
The Leagros Group produced some of the finest Attic vases
It achieved $271,500 against a $250,000 valuation.
The Leagros Group (525-500 BC) were vase painters from the Attic region of Greece who worked alongside one another.
They were among the last to paint in the black figure style.
Their output is highly prized. In all, around 400 vases are known to have survived.
The present lot is a particularly fine example, showing several major gods at rest.
