A Soviet era Russian plate, bearing the communist call to arms “Workers of the World, Unite”, smashed its estimate at Sotheby’s last night.
Sergei Chekhonin, head of the State Porcelain Factory, was behind the design
The piece had been valued at £30,000 ($39,963) but sold for £162,500 ($216,466).
It was designed by Sergei Chekhonin (1878-1936), leader of the State Porcelain Factory in Leningrad, in 1927 to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of the October revolution.
The lot is consigned by the family of Marte R Gomez (1896-1973), a Mexican diplomat and member of the country’s Institutional Revolutionary Party who regularly visited the Soviet Union.
