A rare early 20th century cosmetic box by Asahi Gyokuzan was one of the highlights of Bonhams' fine Japanese art sale in London on May 12.

The cosmetic box, which realised £192,000, is made of white paulownia wood and represents the hallmark of the finest Japanese art: the depiction of the transience of nature.

Asahi Gyokuzan was a designated Imperial Court Artist and one of the most famous and influential carvers in Japan during the Meiji period (1868-1912).

Another highlight of the sale for investors was a lacquer tobacco container by the renowned artist Zibata Zeshin, one of the most admired painters and lacquerers of the Meiji period.

It made £96,000, far beyond its £30,000 high-side estimate.
