Ramsay's portrait of John Campbell, better known as Lord Stonefield, is widely regarded as one of the artist's finest works, and is noted for his superb rendering of Campbell's assertive gaze and the intricate detail with which his costume is decorated.
The portrait was painted in 1749, the year before John Campbell's marriage to Lady Grace Stuart, the daughter of the 2nd Earl of Bute. It is also the year after he was admitted to the respected Faculty of Advocates, now known as the Scottish Bar, and therefore comes at a crucial time in his life. The work is expected to bring £80,000-100,000 and will undoubtedly feature as one of the auction's best-selling lots.
The magnificent portrait will be followed by another superb Ramsay work, this time of a young army officer, George Glanville. The work was painted in 1852 when Ramsay was coming to the end of his first successful period in London, and will sell for an estimated £30,000-40,000.
The top lot of the auction will be provided by Royal Scottish Academy member Samuel John Peploe. As a pioneer of the Colourist medium in Scottish art, Peploe immersed himself in the still life genre, assigning himself the task of creating the perfect composition. The piece at auction, an early and characteristic still life of roses in a Chinese vase, is a great example of his vibrant colour usage. It is expected to bring £200,000-300,000.
The second part of Bonhams' Scottish Sale will feature a remarkable bracelet which Queen Victoria gifted to her lady of the bedchamber. Read the fascinating story here.
