Antique Qing dynasty table set to hold up a $50,000 bid in Asian art auction

In just a fortnight's time, an excellent opportunity for collectors of Asian decorative arts and antiques will be offered in Massachusetts and online. Over 500 lots are going under the hammer, including:

A shallow bowl for those with big appetites has the mark of Qianlong on its base. With bird-and-flower motifs towards the edge of the plate and lotus and peonies in the centre, the 21 ½" blue and white bowl is expected to achieve $5,000 - $10,000.

Whilst Chinese vases have made headline after headline in the past few years, it's worth remembering how spectacular and valuable Japanese vases can be too.

Standing at just under one-and-a-half feet tall, the Japanese Satsuma bulbous vase is in very fine condition. Dating from the Meiji period, it has two finely painted panels with great details and is signed Dai Nihon Kinkozan. It's expected to achieve $10,000-20,000.

However, it is a Chinese, Qing dynasty antique which has top billing in the auction after all. Not an artwork on porcelain at all, but a substantial table made from ebonised zitan wood with berry and leaf motifs and a marble top.

At just under three feet tall, the 53" diameter table was once a part of the John Heard collection, and was even displayed in the Heard House Museum before the 1970s.

In very good original condition, the table is bound to be desirable to many collectors and is listed at $30,000-50,000 in the March 18 sale.
