A Greek table led an auction of pieces from the workshop of Diego Giacometti at Artcurial on September 14.

It realised $569,725 against an estimate of $167,500, equating to an increase of 240.1%.

The lot was part of the collection of Daniel and Elaine Brollo, who met Giacometti in the 1960s (shortly after the death of his artist brother Alberto) and went on to become both friends and patrons.

Most of the pieces in the sale were bought directly from the artist.  

The table is a prime example of Giacometti's distinctive style. It's made from bronze, as was most of his output, and features a bird on the underside.

A pair of lion-headed armchairs realised $554,984, up 148.9% on a $223,334 estimate.

Bruno Jaubert, Artcurial's director of modern art, commented prior to the sale: "To offer such a complete private collection at auction is a real privilege.

"This collection enables us to trace the steps of the artist's work and also observe the relationship he developed with the collector couple in the intimate setting of his atelier."

Diego Giacometti's auction record remains $1.7m, set for a Chevreuil, Biche et Bambi table at Doyle New York in 2013.
