George Washington letter could command $35,000 in New York

Swann Galleries' auction of autographs on April 22 will offer important autographed presidential material, including George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, as well as items signed by musicians, scientists, writers, performing artists and other notables.

Significant presidential examples include a letter signed by George Washington, as Commander-in-Chief, to New York Governor George Clinton reporting on his efforts to obtain food and clothing for Continental Army troops, written on 22 December, 1780.

The Washington signed document is estimated at $25,000 to $35,000).

Meanwhile, an early document autographed twice by Abraham Lincoln, "Stuart & Lincoln," is a petition for divorce on behalf of a client, prepared by the young attorney just three months after receiving his license to practice law. The document is dated to Springfield, 8 July 1837

It will auction priced $7,000 to $10,000.

Earlier this year, a letter by George Washington to his nephew Bushrod in 1778 in which he endorses the idea of the United States Constitution sold for $3.2m at Christie's.

Meanwhile, Paul Fraser Collectibles currently holds another historic and valuable George Washington autograph.
