Herge's 'Blue Lotus' Tintin illustration auctions for $1.2m

An original Herge-drawn page from comic book Tintin and the Blue Lotus has auctioned.

It sold for $1.2m at Artcurial in Hong Kong last night.

The fifth Tintin adventure was serialised between 1934 and 1935


"This drawing [is] one of the finest examples of what can be achieved using the ligne claire style and the only original from this legendary album still in private hands," explained the auction house.

"This illustration epitomises one of Tintin's finest adventures, but also the whole of the 1930s, a period during which Herge established the foundations of the comic strip."

Herge's Tintin works are the world's most collectible comic book art.

A page of 34 Tintin illustrations by Herge sold for $3.7m in 2014 - a record for original comic book art.
