Four pencil sketches from Jean-Michel Basquiat will lead among entry-level works from Warhol, Chagall and Miro on September 5 in Dallas.

Basquiat holds the highest estimate among the notable artists in the sale after a tremendous first-half of 2012, which saw record breaking prices achieved for his work at auction. Christie's raised the world record by 23.3% in June, when his Untitled 1981 sold for $20.1m, and Sotheby's saw his 1982 piece Warrior top its Contemporary Art sale at $8.9m.
The present auction presents an excellent opportunity for lower-level collectors to join the thriving market for his work, with all four sketches presenting a characteristic example of the artist's expressive style at $3,000-5,000.
Also featuring will be a number of sketches from Andy Warhol, including two sparse, yet attractive drawings of his famous Campbell's Soup Cans. The highest estimate of this group is held by a sketch which is personally inscribed "To Mark" and features an addition inscription of "While Stocks Last". This example will sell with a $1,500-2,000 estimate.
The auction house can expect renewed interest in the design after Campbell's recently released a limited edition US-only run of special Andy Warhol-inspired cans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his iconic paintings.
Both Chagall and Miro will be represented by a series of signed sketches and drawings on exhibition catalogues, with estimates ranging from $300 to $1,500.
