Kate Moss' first modelling photo up 167% on estimate

Three photographs from supermodel Kate Moss' first modelling shoot have sold at a UK auction this afternoon (November 23).

David Ross captured the black and white gelatin silver prints in 1988, just months after the 14-year-old had first been spotted by a talent scout at New York's JFK airport.

estimate by 167%

The works, which each had a £1,200 ($1,906) high estimate, hammered for £3,200 ($2,000), £1,500 ($937) and £1,000 ($625), respectively.

The leading figure (up 166.6% on estimate) was achieved by a striking portrait, in which Moss looks piercingly at the camera.

The strong performance of the collection is evidence of the value collectors attach to important items from a famous figure's formative years.

A series of 1946 photographs taken of 20-year-old Norma Jeane Dougherty, who would later become better known as Marilyn Monroe, sold for $300,000 in 2011.

"[Moss] was a cool character. She seemed like a tough or resilient typical teenager, comfortably fronting me up, perhaps covering up her nerves," Ross explained prior to the auction.

"I suppose what was refreshing was that she was honest. She wasn't trying to prove anything or act above her station."

The record for a single photograph of Moss remains at the $97,000 achieved by one of 16 1996 Irving Penn platinum-palladium prints that sold at Christie's in 2008.
