Manjit Bawa's Untitled (Durga) is valued at $380,000-450,000 ahead of Christie's South Asian Modern and Contemporary auction in New York on September 17.

Bawa painted figures from Indian mythology

The sale will take place as part of Asian Art Week.

Bawa (1941-2008) studied art in the UK during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He worked in London for a time as a printmaker before returning to his native India, where he began to paint figures from Sufi and Hindu mythology.

The present work depicts Durga, one of the many forms of the goddess Shakti, mounted on a lion and displays the artist's minimalist approach to his subject.

Syed Haider Raza's La Terre is valued at $250,000-350,000.

The piece is one of a series the artist painted while living in Paris during the 1970s that explore his memories of India and "the fear and the fascination of the Indian forest."

Another La Terre work sold for $3.1m at Christie's New York in March. His auction record stands at $3.4m, set for a piece titled Saurashtra at Christie's in 2010.
