Heritage Auctions makes its return to comic book sales on February 21-22 in New York, with a spectacular listing headlined by the original cover art for the iconic series Watchmen.
![]() The Shamus Modern Masterworks Collection boosted Heritage's 2012 sales considerably, and is likely to do the same in 2013 |
Some of the most iconic comic book covers ever created, the auction will feature the first three covers in the series. They are sure to attract global attention. They are being sold from the Modern Masterworks Collection of Martin Shamus, father of Wizard Magazine founder Gareb Shamus.
The collection was partly responsible for Heritage Auctions' record sales in 2012, after the Todd McFarlane cover art for Amazing Spider-Man #328 set a new world record at $657,250.
The original artwork from page one of Watchmen #1 - featuring the first appearance of Rorschach - sold at auction for $33,640 in 2010, so Heritage Auctions can expect very strong results for its offerings. The cover from Watchmen #1 will likely sell with the highest bids, as an "iconic cover image that kicked off a revolution in comic history", in the words of Heritage Auctions.
All three covers are in excellent condition, as expected from the Modern Masterworks Colllection. Also available are several original pages from the series, which will likely provide a more affordable option for fans.
Created by the legendary Alan Moore in 1986, Watchmen's unique take on the superhero genre is perfectly complemented by long-time collaborator Dave Gibbons' art. First published by DC, the 12-part mini series of graphic novels is now one of the best-selling graphic novels of all-time and is listed in Time magazine's top 100 novels.
