Peter Doig's Road House will headline contemporary art sale at Christie's

Peter Doig's Road House (1991) is to lead a sale of contemporary art at Christie's New York on May 12 with a $9.5m-11.5m estimate.

Road House was executed shortly after Doig graduated from Chelsea School of Art in 1991

Scotsman Doig is known for his abstract, dreamlike landscapes that draw inspiration from a variety of sources. Most famously he produced a series of paintings based on the closing sequence of seminal 1980s horror film Friday the 13th.

Doig's work continually performs well at auction, with Jetty (1994) achieving £7.3m ($11.3m) at Christie's London, and The Architect's Home in the Ravine setting a new artist auction record of £7.7m ($13m) last year - reinforcing his reputation as one of the most collectible European artists.

Aqualung (1985), a sculpture by pop artist Jeff Koons, is expected to make $9m-12m.

The work consist of a bronze cast of a scuba device and is drawn from the artist's equilibrium series, in which basketballs are suspended in tanks of water and sodium chloride.

Koons holds the record for the most valuable living artist after his iconic Balloon Dog (Orange) sold for $58.4m at Christie's major post war and contemporary art auction in November 2013.
