Renoir's Paysage du Midi valued at $1.1m ahead of June 25 sale

Pierre-Auguste Renoir's Paysage du Midi (circa 1917-1919) is estimated to make £480,000-700,000 ($815,520-1.1m) at Christie's London on June 25.

The work dates to late in the artist's career, a time when he was suffering the effects of rheumatoid arthritis and was reportedly strapping a brush to his hand in order to paint.

These radically experimental works would influence many younger painters - Matisse wrote in a letter to his wife in 1918: "I have just come back from Renoir's house where I have seen some marvellous paintings".

Renoir (1841-1919) was instrumental in the development of impressionism and is highly sought after among collectors. His record stands at $78.1m, paid for his iconic Bal du moulin de la Galette at Sotheby's New York in 1990.

We have this incredible handwritten letter by Renoir for sale.

Claude Monet's Portrait de Jeanne Serveau (1880) is another highlight with an estimate of £480,000-700,000 ($815,520-1.1m).

The work depicts the daughter of a wealthy merchant in Vetheuil, where Monet lived between 1878 and 1881. Although he painted a number of portraits over the course of his career, he remains best known for his iconic landscapes.

In May last year, a work from his Nympheas series sold for $27m at Christie's in New York, while on June 23 another will auction in London with an estimate of £30m ($50.4m).

We have a handwritten letter from Monet available.
