A rare print of Richard Avedon's Bob Dylan portrait has been consigned to an October 4 auction with outstanding provenance.

Avedon gifted the portrait to the cover artist for 1967's Greatest Hits

The print was personally gifted by the illustrious photographer to Bob Cato, the graphic designer who created the cover art for Dylan's 1967 release, Greatest Hits. The record would go on to win that year's Grammy award for best album cover and remains Dylan's best-selling album in the US.

The print was later passed to Bob's son, Eric Cato, who has supplied a letter of provenance to accompany the lot. The image itself was first published in Harper's Bazaar in 1965 and is a striking depiction of Bob Dylan passing through New York's Central Park. It will be sold with a $20,000-30,000 estimate, boasting Avedon's signature with two hand stamps on the reverse.

Also featuring in the sale will be Edward Clark's stunning large-format colour glamour shot of Marilyn Monroe in a Mink Stole. Clark was a staff photographer for Twentieth Century Fox, and his first shots of Monroe show the starlet at the outset of her career in 1950.  

Having been mounted to aluminium for gallery purposes, the work was first printed in 1995 and is one in a limited edition run of just 10. A superb shot, it will sell with an $8,000-12,000 estimate.
