The iconic portrait of Natassja Kinski by American photographer Richard Avedon is to be sold at auction on May 1.

The 1981 image entitled Natassja Kinski and the Serpent made its first appearance in an issue of Vogue magazine, before becoming a best-selling poster. The actress is best known for her Golden Globe winning performance in Roman Polanski's Tess, based on the novel Tess of the D'Urbervilles.
The sex symbol posed for the shoot for over two hours before the image was captured. Ed Jaster, senior vice president at Heritage Auctions commented: "The Burmese python came up to touch her face and Avedon snapped the shot at the perfect moment. This is one of the greatest modern American photos ever taken by one of America's greatest masters."
The gelatine silver print is numbered four of 200 and is one of the most famous of Avedon's works. His photo of Charlene van Tighem sold at Christie's for $170,500 on April 5, 2012, suggesting this arresting print could well exceed its high estimate of $70,000.
Also in the sale is Annie Liebovitz's intimate depiction of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The revealing yet serene image shows a naked John clutching Yoko on the floor next to their bed. The colour print features an inscription from Liebovitz: "On the Occasion of their wedding - Sunday May 24th 1987, all my love, Annie". It is expected to make $20,000-30,000 at auction.
John Lennon collectors will want to view Paul Fraser Collectibles' postcard photograph, signed by all members of The Beatles. We also have a fantastic signed copy of A Hard Days Night, of which only 10 are thought to exist.
