15.11.88 by Zao Wou-Ki (1920-2013) has sold for £746,500 ($1.2m) at Sotheby's contemporary art day auction in London.

It exceeded an estimate of £400,000 ($664,320) by 86.6% on February 13.

Wou-Ki's work successfully bridges the gap between Chinese and Western art, with this example dating to the 1980s and indicating a significant influence from the impressionists.

This latest sale follows recent strong results for the artist, including Foret de Bambou and Abstraction - the latter setting a new artist record in December last year.

Lucio Fontana's Concetto Spaziale, Attesta (1964-1965) was another highlight of the present sale, achieving £698,500 ($1.1m).

The painting is a prime example of Fontana's concept of spacialism, which sought to blur the lines between painting and sculpture by creating a fourth dimension to the canvas, often by stabbing or slashing it.

As in abstract expressionism, the canvas becomes the record of the act.

His auction record is held by Concetto Spaziale, Le Chiese de Vienna, a work that made $6.8m at Sotheby's New York in June 2013.

Gunther Uecker's Sonnenuberflutung (Transgression) (1963) achieved £506,500 ($846,158) against a £300,000 ($501,180) valuation.

His record was set at Sotheby's Paris in 2009, when Energetic Bilds sold for $659,965.
