A portrait of James Dean signed by the actor is selling at RR Auction on August 10-17.
At the bottom left Dean has added his signature, along with a mysterious inscription.
This portrait of James Dean is by an artist named Ray Lucas
It reads: “Dear Kitty, Look not in this figure for the greatness that is demanded of me. My meager resources help to answer very little.
“I among a myriad of sparks that become so called stars suffer to fulfill this simple task-anyway the meek will inherit-James Dean."
The charcoal and pastel illustration was executed by artist Ray Lucas in 1955 - the year Dean died. It’s unclear how he and Dean met, or who Kitty was.
The lot last sold for $8,962 when it crossed the block in a major auction of pieces from the Planet Hollywood collection in 2002.
The time around it’s valued in excess of $18,000.
