A rare second printing of the Articles of Confederation document is to provide the main draw at Heritage Auctions' Rare Books Signature Auction on April 10 in New York.

The Articles of Confederation preceeded, and was replaced by, the Constitution

The document, complete in six quarto pages, is expected to see bids in excess of $15,000. It is described as "one of the great documents in our (American) history".

Printed by Hall and Sellers on November 14, 1777, this is the second printing of the first appearance of the Articles of Confederation, which was an agreement among the 13 colonies that established the United States of America as a union of sovereign states. It also served as the first constitution of the US.

The drafting of the Articles began in 1776, one year into the revolutionary war. They were then formally ratified by all of the states in 1781, marking the end of the Continental Congress. However, after the war had been won, it was clear that the Articles were too weak and they were then replaced with the Constitution in 1789.

The example at auction was removed from a book and, although its pages are browned and show some small tears and chips, is in surprisingly good condition. It will undoubtedly attract strong attention, with copies of this important item being extremely rare on the market.

Also starring at Heritage is a first edition, first printing copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which is expected to see $30,000+. Produced in an extremely small run of just 500 copies in 1997, this example of the book that launched one of the largest franchises of recent times is in fantastic condition, with Heritage Auctions stating that it is "the best copy we've ever seen."
