Original drawings from John James Audubon's landmark ornithological work, The Birds of America, are to go under the hammer at Bonhams California on February 17. The historic plates are expected to bring between $80,000 and $120,000.

The plates derive from one of the largest and most comprehensive illustrated works ever to be undertaken in 19th century America. Out of the 150 plates in the original edition, 148 are to be offered - some hand finished.
A complete set of the original edition sold for $11.6m in December 2010 - achieving a new world record price for a printed book sold at auction.
