The dust is still settling after PBA galleries rare book auction this week. That sale, titled Fine Americana: The Northwest Library of John M McClelland, Jr, was headed by a copy of A Voyage of Discovery to the North Pacific Ocean, and Round the World by George Vancouver.
The book went under the hammer with an estimate of $25,000-35,000, and we'll let you know how it did shortly.
PBA will not be resting for long, however, and their next book sale will be themed on Fine Golf Books & Memorabilia.
The auction house has form in this area. For example, last year, they offered very rare copies of the first book devoted to golf, and the first book on golf collecting: Rules of the Thistle Club, (first edition) and Harry B Woods' Golfing Curios with the latter achieving a record price for the publication.
This time, the sale will be headed by The Duffers' Golf Club Papers, to which is added, A Day on the Ladies' Links, and the lot is expected to achieve $20,000-30,000.

The 1891 book comes with the bookplate of golf collector Joseph Bridger Hackler tipped in at front pastedown. A very rare book, only once before offered at PBA Galleries at the Murdoch sale. However, that copy did not have the original wrappers bound within.
The Preface begins:
"These papers originally appeared in the Montrose Standard and met with such general acceptance that the author has been induced to partly re-write and to republish them in a collected form, believing that the great and increasing interest in the classic game of golf will make them acceptable to much wider circles of readers...
"The characters are drawn from life, and the incidents described in most of the matches are real and not imaginary."
The book includes chapters on: The formation of the Club, the members, the first meeting, the first match, the lunch, the second round, the evening after, etc. PBA Galleries' sale takes place on February 3, 2011 in California and online
