Sold in contemporary binding, the rare early Paris edition was auctioned with a pre-sale estimate of €30,000-50,000.

According to the book's condition report, it has some "clumsy" restoration to its leather cover, a small scratch and a few light spots.

Despite these minor cosmetic foibles, bidders at Artcurial weren't deterred and the book swashbuckled its way to a final price of €73,135.

Les Trois Mousquetaires, or The Three Musketeers, was first published by Baudry of Paris in 1844 and follows the the adventures of Athos, Porthos, Aramis and their friend D'Artagnan.

Alexandre Dumas, pére, was born Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie in July 1802. His other famous works include The Count of Monte Cristo and The Vicomte de Bragelonne.
