A first edition of horror author HP Lovecraft's debut novel has sold for $9,000.
The rare copy of 1928's The Shunned House was the star of PBA Galleries' October 5 rare books sale in San Francisco, almost doubling its $5,000 high estimate.

It was one of only 300 first editions produced, and one of only 50 bound copies in circulation.
Little known during his lifetime, it was only after Lovecraft's death in 1937, aged just 46, that he became world-renowned.
