It features a unique, original handwritten manuscript page from the Estate of Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain) in volume one. This set is hand-numbered 56 of 90 sets containing the manuscript material and signed by the publisher.
The work is illustrated with frontispiece portraits and occasional illustrations throughout. The volumes show mild external age/wear, with light shelf wear, and are solidly bound with clean, lightly age-toned pages, featuring gilded top edges.
The fold-out manuscript page has a small piece of tape along the top of the folded edge, where a tear was beginning along the fold. These volumes have a faint tobacco aroma. The books measure approximately 6" x 9".
A fantastic piece from one of America's most loved and celebrated writers, it is expected to bring $12,000-$15,000 in the September 11 sale in Ithaca, New York. A pamphlet signed and inscribed by the author is also available away from the sale.
