A portfolio of photographs by William Henry Jackson titled Das Alpine America (1885) will star in a sale at PBA Galleries in San Francisco on December 17.
Jackson was an explorer and surveyor employed by the US government to scout out suitable railroad routes through the American west.

He was among the first to photograph some of the nation's most famous landmarks, including the Teton Range, the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Park.
This collection of 25 of his images was bought by a wealthy Swiss family in the late 19th century and has passed down by descent ever since.
