A rare 1950 Ferrari 166 MM/12 Export Uovo, one of the marque's strangest models, is coming to auction at RM Sotheby’s in Santa Monica.
The Uovo was designed by sculptor Gianni Marzotto
The bodywork was commissioned by racing driver Gianni Marzotto. It was designed by abstract sculptor Franco Reggani and built by Carrozzeria Fontana.
Uovo is Italian for egg, giving an indication as to what inspired the unusual shape.
Despite its odd looks, it turned out to be a bit of a belter on the track – performing well at the 1951 Mille Miglia (until technical troubles forced it to retire) and snatching a win at the Coppa della Toscana.
The car is expected to make around $5.5m in the August 18-19 sale.
