1981 DeLorean DMC12 beats estimate by 22.4% at classic car auction

A 1981 DeLorean DMC12 has beaten its £24,000 high estimate by 22.4% at a classic car sale in Buxton, Derbyshire, UK.

The vehicle, which features the iconic DeLorean polished aluminium bodywork and grey trim colour, sold for £29,380 at the April 19 auction.

Made famous for all time by the Back To The Future films of the 1980s, the DMC-12 is a star in its own right.

Featuring one of the most unique designs of the 1980s, including gull-wing doors, the vehicle was powered by a 130 bhp Peugeot-Renault-Volvo engine.

Car collectors are also enraptured by the controversial legacy of the DMC-12's creator, entrepreneur John DeLorean.

After a period of great hype and mixed reviews, production of the DMC-12 came to a halt in 1982. The company faced bankruptcy and John DeLorean was arrested on drug trafficking charges.

A replica of the film series' DeLorean time machine car once auctioned for $112,920.

This week's auction also featured a superb 1970 Aston Martin DB6 Mark 2 Vantage, featuring just 38,000 on the clock, which sold for £210,000.

A 1988 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante X-Pack 6.3, capable of 0-60 mph in just 5.4 seconds, achieved £123,200.

The classic car market is an exciting place at the moment. Values rose 13.89% last year, according to the HAGI Top 50 Index, the Historic Auto Group's price index of leading classic cars.
