Offered on January 18, the 1960 Ferrari's estimated sale price has yet to be announced by RM Auctions, though the Daily Mail newspaper has reported that another model sold for £3.1m ($5m) in 2011. Following another good year for Ferrari - the sector is up 22.9% in 2012 according to the HAGI F-Index - it can expect to beat these results, which will place it within the most valuable cars ever sold at auction.
In August, a 1956 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Berlinetta "Tour de France" - one of just nine examples ever built - sold for $6.7m at Pebble Beach.
The Berlinetta Competizione is one of only 74 models built during 1960 and is one of the finest of its class. Boasting an alloy body, it is fitted with a three litre V12 engine that produces 280 bhp.
On testing the car, a specialist from the auction house commented: "I am already envious of the car's new owner, as he will have the privilege of owning and driving one of the most purposeful and beautiful examples Ferrari ever produced!"
Having had just four owners in the last 52 years, the car is in impeccable condition and has won numerous FCA Platinum Awards.
