The auction took place at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which brings car enthusiasts together each year to celebrate both modern and classic vehicles.

It was originally expected to sell for £100,000-120,000, so beat its top estimate. This is unsurprising given the fact that it is not just a vintage Lamborghini, but it also happened to be owned by one of the world's most famous musicians.

The 400GT 2+2 was not actually the highlight of the auction though, as that honour went the stunning 1925 Bugatti Type 35B, which sold for a whopping £430,500 ($692,000).
Described as the 'most beautiful racing car of all time', it was owned by former director of the Bugatti owners club Jack Perkins, who died in 1992. He bought it in 1950 for £60 after finding it in Nottinghamshire.
His plan was to customise and make it the fastest possible 35B, resulting in it being equipped with a methanol burning engine and ultra-streamlined body. The work paid off, as it set a time of 52.15 seconds at Prescott, home to the Bugatti owners club, in 1954.

Brining things much more up to date was the sale of a 1989 Ferrari F40 Berlinetta, which sold for £353,500 ($568,448). Introduced in the late 1980s specifically to celebrate Enzo Ferrari's 40 years of manufacturing anniversary, this mid-engined, turbocharged beast is an incredible machine. It will undoubtedly become a future classic, if it is not already.
