Current F1 champion Sebastian Vettel has taken pole position in Bonhams' Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia auction, with his race suit selling ahead of other top Formula One drivers.

The auction, which was held yesterday (December 3) at the Brooklands racetrack in Surrey, offered the suits of the six Formula One champions competing in 2012. Vettel's 2012 Austalian Grand Prix suit sold for an impressive £13,750 ($22,164).

All profits from the sale of the suits will benefit Wings for Life, a spinal cord injury research charity for which Vettel has been an ambassador for a number of years. He also donated a signed pair of matching race gloves, which sold for £2,750 ($4,433), commenting: "I'm proud to have donated my race suit and gloves during the first race of this season in Melbourne."

Bids were likely boosted by another fantastic racing season for Vettel

Jenson Button, whose suit from the 2011 Turkish Grand prix also sold for £4,375 ($7,053), commented prior to the sale: "I'm sure that for collectors of Formula One memorabilia, this is a truly unique opportunity. Every championship winning driver has chipped in to create quite a collection."

Bringing the auction's second highest bids was Fernando Alonso's 2011 season race suit, which brought £7,500 ($12,092). A signed pair of his gloves made £1,062 ($1,712).

Lewis Hamilton's 2011 Turkish Grand Prix suit sold for £5,125 ($8,262), selling above his former McLaren team mate Jenson Button.
