Last week a stunning collection of classic vehicles arrived in Kansas for Mecum's car auction. The sale saw some impressive results, and a number of collectors drove home in much classier rides than the ones they arrived in.
The star of the show was, as we predicted, the 1957 Ford Thunderbird F Bird Convertible. One of just 212 factory supercharged cars ever built, the Thunderbird's rarity and award-winning status meant it was always going to attract some serious collectors. And after some fierce bidding it eventually sold for $186,000, making it the top-selling car of the auction.
Second on the list was a 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback. This early production car was only the 112th model ever made, and had been perfectly restored and rebuilt. Although initially unpopular with muscle-car fans at the time of its release, it has since become highly sought-after by collectors and sold at the auction for $175,000.

Third was a stylish 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Big Tank Coupe, one of only four factory known big tank cars built in 1966. The car had been completely restored with a matching-numbers engine, and was a definite favourite with collectors at the auction selling for a hammer price of $141,000.
Other notable sales included a 1957 Ford Thunderbird E Bird Convertible which reached $132,000 and a powerful 1969 Shelby GT500 Fastback which sold for $105,000.
2010 has seen the market for classic American cars, and muscle cars in particular, go from strength to strength with a number of successful auctions. With planning for major sales in 2011 already underway, the competition between auction houses grows greater with every event. And as consignments grow ever more spectacular, it can only be good news for collectors looking to invest in the rarest and best cars on the market.
