An 1897 Chinese Fengtien aluminium dollar pattern led a sale of world coins at Heritage Auctions on December 12, realising $89,625.
The dollar pattern was minted in Germany as a prototype for production in China |
It was designed in Germany for production in the province of Fengtien, China but misspells FENG TIEN as TENG TIEN.
Heritage comments: "While this unfortunate mistake would have certainly lost a company its bid to produce dies for the local Mukden mint, for the most serious collector of Fengtien issues or Empire dollars in general, it has produced a type that will stand the test of time as a must-have conversation piece."
