The 2012 ANA World's Fair of Money will see six days of coin auctions from August 4

The American Numismatic Association's World's Fair of Money 2012 will be highlighted by an incredibly rare $500 banknote, in a series of important coin auctions which begin on August 4.

The note comes with great provenance from three major collections

According to the auction house, the 1878 legal tender note only surfaces within public sales roughly once every five years and is one of only six known serial numbers for the 1878 series date. It comes with impeccable provenance, having once been housed in the renowned Amon Carter collection, the Frank Levitan collection and now consigned from the Anderson collection. The banknote is currently tied for the finest available in the extremely fine grade with another ex Amon Carter example. It shows a large vignette portrait of Major General Joseph King Mansfield at the right, with an impressive allegorical vignette of Victory at the left. A landmark rarity, it is expected to sell for $300,000-500,000 on August 8. Among the dozens of highlights at the fair will be the Pueblo Collection of US Gold Coins, which focuses on coins from the treasure of the SS Central America shipwreck, as well as rare and desirable double eagles. One of the star attractions from the collection will be an 1853/'2' Liberty Double Eagle -graded PCGS MS-61 -which stands as one of just nine uncirculated pieces and is among the highest graded examples. It is currently selling with a reserve price of $24,000, although no estimate has been set by the auction house.
