An 1897 Chinese Fengtien aluminium dollar pattern is to star in a sale of world and ancient coins at Heritage Auctions.
|
It's expected to make around $75,000-100,000 in the December 12 sale.
The die for the piece was produced in Germany for minting in the city of Mukden in Fengtien, China. However, it displays an unfortunate misspelling - with FENG-TIEN written as TENG-TIEN.
Heritage explains: "While this unfortunate mistake would have certainly lost a company its bid to produce dies for the local Mukden mint, for the most serious collector of Fengtien issues or Empire dollars in general, it has produced a type that will stand the test of time as a must-have conversation piece."
