Coins sale led by Edward VI and Paul Kruger will turn heads in March

Dix Noonan Webb's British and World Coins auction in March is poised to offer plenty of excitement for coin collectors.

The 146 lot auction takes place at the Washington Hotel in London's Mayfair on March 16 and could provide some potential gems for coin investors looking to pick up a bargain.

A leading light of the sale is a South African Paul Kruger, half-pond, double shaft specimen from 1892. Despite some minor bag marks this item is in better than extremely fine condition and comes with an estimate of £1,200 to £1,500.

Another highlight of the event is a coin from Edward VI's reign of 1547 to 1553. This six-ounce testoon has a crowned leopard's head on the reverse and is extremely rare. Despite being from slightly rusty dies it is in better than fine condition. It comes from the RA Shuttlewood Collection and has an estimation of £600 to £800.

Edward VI was the son of Henry VIII

Edward VI coins can change hands for huge amounts. In October 2010 a 1551 sovereign made £70,000 at auction.

A 1623 Piédfort coin from the reign of James I is another item that is sure to have the investors interested. This extremely rare item, which is in nearly very fine condition, comes from the Earl of Ducie Collection and has a top end estimate of £1,500.

While the figures quoted in this auction may be small beer compared to some we have reported on recently, the sale is a perfect example of how it is possible to build a varied and potentially lucrative coin collection without too significant an outlay.
