Last week, on April 14, Heritage and Gemini completed their major collaborative auction focussed primarily on investment-grade ancient coins of Greece and Rome.
There were a number of highlights on offer, one of which was a gold medallion from the reign of Constantius II (337-361 AD).
The obverse shows a pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust which his head facing left, though his shoulders are apparently facing out.

The reverse shows Roma and Constantinopolis enthroned, the one helmeted and facing out, the other turreted and with their right foot on prow, turned left towards her. Each is holding a globe surmounted by Victory who is crowning her, and a sceptre.
A beautiful coin, it had been part of a series of collections including the Trau and Triton III Collection prior to this auction. Only the fifth recorded specimen of its kind, it had been expected to fetch $110,000 in the Chicago auction but instead was pushed up to an even more impressive $126,500.
