Qatar and Dubai 25 riyal note set for '$40,000' sale

A 25 riyal note issued by the Qatar and Dubai Currency Board in the 1960s is estimated to make £20,000-25,000 ($32,150-40,187) at Spink London on December 5-6.

The lot will headline an auction of world banknotes.

The 25 riyal note was introduced in the 1960s

The Qatar and Dubai riyal was adopted in March 1966, and produced until 1973 when Dubai entered the United Arab Emirates.

The rare note is blue on a multicolour underprint and features a dhow, oil derrick and palm at the left with the value in each corner.

It displays faint glue stains at the corners on the reverse and evidence of some light handling but is otherwise in extremely fine condition.

A Spitzbergen Coal Mine 100 ruble note, issued in 1940, is valued at £9,000-12,000 ($14,467-19,290).

Arktikugol, the Russian state mining company, issued the banknotes to miners in the remote colony of Spitzbergen - the largest and most populated island of the Svalbard archipelago, which sits off the coast of Norway.

The note was issued to employees of Arktikugol on the island of Spitzbergen

The island was evacuated in 1941, when the Soviet pact of non-aggression against Germany was broken.

Allied forces were sent to destroy the mines shortly after the island was deserted, and operations did not resume until 1946.

The note features pinholes and small rush marks at the top left but is otherwise in fine condition.
