Rare coin from the sunken 'Ship of Gold' auctions in New York

A few interesting entry-level investment coins will be offered alongside some of the very finest in certified and graded United States stamps at Michael I Casper, later today (July 1, Eastern Daylight Time).

Among the numismatic treasures for sale is a 1915-S Panama-Pacific Exposition Quarter Eagle. Graded MS66 by the PCGS, the coin is described as "wonderfully original" and "absolutely beautiful" with a blend of orange-gold and rose-gold colours upon its surface.

The coin has a bold strike, with a satin-to-softly frosted luster on both its sides. According to Michael I Casper, its surfaces are "uncommonly smooth" for an example of its type with no surface blemishes of any kind. It carries an estimate of $7,000.

Also appearing is this gem proof "1855" Kellogg & Co $50 Gold Commemorative Re-strike, dated to September 2, 2001, with lovely yellow-gold surfaces.

Estimated at $7,500, the coin is made from 2 ½ ounces of gold from the SS Central America. The boat sank in 1857, taking 400 passengers and crew and 30,000 pounds of gold with it.

The 280-foot Central America steamer was nicknamed "the Ship of Gold" because of its valuable haul, and operated between Central America and the US's east coast during the 1850s.

1893-CC Morgan Silver Dollar aka 'the final Carson City dollar'

So valued was the ship's cargo that its sinking contributed to a sudden downturn in the US's economy, today remembered as the Panic of 1857.

Meanwhile, last - but by no means least - is the 1893-CC Morgan Silver Dollar. Graded MS62 (PCGS), this is a fully-lustrous Mint State example of the final Carson City dollar.

With brilliant silver surfaces and beautiful toning along its obverse rim, the Morgan Silver Dollar will appear at Michael I Casper with a pre-sale estimate of $7,500.

Collectors across the globe have a chance to bid on these historic coins via Michael I Casper's website. The auction is being held in Ithaca, New York.
