Rare coins auction journeys from Ancient Greece to Modern Rome

The Artemide Aste sale of rare coins and medals on December 18 has two standout lots, with more than 2000 years between them.

The highest-priced coin of the auction is a rare Greek Tetradrachm from the city of Agrigentum, dated 464-450 B.C. The coin was widely used in transactions throughout the ancient Grecian world, and its use spread with trade between ships.

Featuring an eagle with closed wing, and a crab on the reverse, the coin is incredibly preserved and has been described as "one of the best known examples" of its type. It has an estimated price of $32,979 but due to its amazing condition it could see much higher.

The second notable lot is an Italian commemorative medal created to celebrate the wedding of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil to Princess Teresa Christina of Naples in 1843. The medal features shields of Braganza and Bourbon topped by the imperial crown and on the reverse Hymen standing holding wreath in right and left single lit torch.

Described as "probably unique", the medal has an estimated base price of $29,000.

The sale also includes an excellent and varied collection of rare coins and medals from the ancient Greek and Roman empires, and should be equally as popular for both entry-level investors looking to start a collection and those looking to complete one.
