Revealing the '$60,000' Kiangnan Province coin set from year 1897AD

If you fancy getting more than one coin for your money, then how about this mini set of provincial issue pieces from China's Kiangnan Province.

The Kiangnan Mint first minted a complete set of five silver coins (including one-dollar, half-dollar, 20-cent, 10-cent and 5-cent in year 1897AD during the Kuang Hsu reign.

It is believed that Kiangnan silver coins were issued only in small quantities and only for a short period.

Single examples of each of these coins, from the one-dollar to five-cent, will appear for sale as a single lot at Baldwin's upcoming August 25 auction at the Holiday Inn Golden Mile, Kowloon.

The Hong Kong sale celebrates the auctioneer's 25th year holding auctions in the Orient and will feature 1,064 numismatic lots.

Among these, this Kiangnan coin set will appear with a US$50,000-60,000 estimate.

According to Baldwin's lot notes, the 5- and 10- cents are fine, the 20- Cents is "good very fine", the 50- Cents is both fine and rare, and the Dollar is "good extremely fine".

Other key lots in the sale include a number of Chinese Empire and General Issue banknotes. Among them is a Ming Dynasty (1366-1644): 1-Kuan, issued by Emperor Hong Wu.

The piece is estimated at US$55,000-65,000, and you can see our full report about it here.

Meanwhile, Baldwin's has gone from strength-to-strength in proving that fine wines aren't the only collectibles to make a big splash in the East.

Baldwin's has staged 50 auctions in the region, of which twenty-two were held in Singapore, two in Tokyo and twenty-six in Hong Kong.

In 1994 Spink broke their link with Taisei and handed the reins over to Baldwin's. Since then, the biannual Hong Kong week has become a major international event devoted primarily to oriental numismatics.

Sales apparently now attract awaiting list of up to two years.
