Bonhams has announced that it will auction a newly discovered cache of US $20 gold coins as part of its June sale of Rare Coins and Medals in Los Angeles.
|
The find occurred in February 2012, while a worker was remodelling a building at the Champagne Lanson Bonnet vineyard in France. Some 497 double eagles were discovered in all, dating from 1851 to 1928, with a combined approximate value of $1m.
All of the coins have been graded either Very Fine or Choice Mint State. While some coin collectors may be excited by the find, others will wait with bated breath to see how this influx will affect the value of their own double eagle collections.
