A rare photograph of Abraham Lincoln's first inauguration, on March 4, 1861, is offered at Sotheby's.
|
The person behind the camera is unknown, but it's possible that it could have been Alexander Gardner - a pioneering photojournalist who photographed Lincoln throughout his presidency.
Sotheby's believes this to be the first time a copy of this print has been offered at auction. It's valued at $20,000-30,000 ahead of an October 7 photography sale.
An exceptional signed photograph of Lincoln made $175,000 in a dedicated auction at Heritage on September 17.
