Sports collectors looking to get their mitts on a unique piece of Olympic memorabilia have had their hopes dashed.

We brought you the news yesterday that the net in which Canada forward Sidney Crosby scored to defeat the US in the 2010 Olympic hockey final was up for auction.

Today it appears that the net has been removed from sale by Montreal-based auctioneer Classic Auctions.

The Hockey Hall of Fame and VANOC, the organising committee for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, raised serious objections regarding the net's consignment by an Olympic equipment supplier.

Classic Auctions president Marc Juteau has revealed that following discussions between the equipment supplier and VANOC the net will now be donated to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

The net will join the stick and gloves Crosby wore for the final, as well as the game winning puck, at the museum.

"I think everybody's really excited to complete the collection," Terry Wright, executive vice-president of VANOC, told the Canadian Press.

"It's a nice thing to do to close the chapter on that game," he added.

The net will form part of the Hockey Hall of Fame's Double Gold exhibition, which celebrates the gold medals of both the Canadian men's and women's teams.
