An iconic jumpsuit worn by daredevil Evel Knievel has sold at auction.

The patriotic white leather garment, featuring numerous scuffs, sold for $108,000 at Heritage Auctions on the weekend, beating its $80,000 estimate.

Knievel revealed the cane's secret feature live on The Johnny Carson Show

The stuntman wore it during his February 18, 1973 motorcycle jump over 50 cars at the Los Angeles Coliseum and at several more heart-stopping feats during the 1970s.

The price is testament to Knievel's huge fame in the 70s and 80s – fame that left his body in constant pain and with 35 broken bones. The fact it came directly from the Knievel family also boosted its appeal.

"Ask any man in America over the age of forty the identity of the greatest daredevil that ever lived, and there is invariably only a single answer," commented the auction house.

“It was Knievel's determination and imagination that truly set him apart as a one of a kind legend that has never been rivalled."

A Knievel jumpsuit bearing a different pattern sold for $40,000 in 2012.

Knievel’s diamond studded cane, which contained a secret whisky flask, also sold above estimate – for $78,000.
