Bidding on a box of Fidel Castro’s personal Trinidad Fundadores cigars stands at $4,200 ahead of a close date of January 10 at RR Auction.
Castro has included his signature on the lid of the box, while the original “Republica de Cuba" sticker has been carefully reapplied, to give the buyer the full experience.
These Trinidad Fundadores were originally reserved for Castro alone
Castro was rarely seen in public without one of his trademark cigars. Trinidad Fundadores are among Cuba’s finest and were produced exclusively for el presidente between 1980 and 1998.
Castro gifted the box to Hungarian-American philanthropist Dr Eva Haller in 2002.
She explains: “Castro handed to me the box of cigars. He gave them to me, because I jokingly asked him for it, when others lit a cigar. I told him, that if he signs the box, I will sell it and make lots of money.
“He thought that was funny...we have some photos of the occasion.”
Castro, who died in 2016, was one of the defining figures of the 20th century. That’s a remarkable feat given Cuba’s diminutive size.
Consequently demand for Castro and Cuban revolutionary memorabilia is enormous.
