A bathrobe worn by Marilyn Monroe has gone under the hammer in Las Vegas for a staggering $120,000.

It sold to a private collector on Saturday during a two-day Julien's Auctions memorabilia sale. The auction also featured items belonging to Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson, reported femalefirst.co.uk.

The same item sold for $6,000 at Christies a decade ago - giving a 35% per annum return - compounded!

The bathrobe is believed to be the last thing Monroe wore prior to her death in 1962.

A necklace belonging to Monroe was another highlight in the auction. Despite being damaged with some stones missing, an included photo of Monroe wearing the necklace helped it bring in $56,000.

Other big sales included a signed Jackson 5 album. It was expected to bring between $400 and $600, but sold for a staggering $33,750.

The Julien's auction showed that the power of iconography on memorabilia values remains strong.
