Marilyn Monroe memorabilia: Why now is the time to act

The common consensus when it comes to Marilyn Monroe memorabilia is that 2012 will be the year the already strong market reaches unprecedented levels.

On May 19 it will be the 50th anniversary of the night she sang her saucy rendition of "Happy Birthday" for President John F Kennedy.

More poignantly, August 5 will mark 50 years since her death, at the age of just 36.

Both events are expected to receive considerable attention in the media, boosting her already high-profile and bringing an influx of new collectors to the Marilyn Monroe memorabilia market.

The Authentic Brands Group paid an estimated $30m for the rights to Monroe's estate in 2011, indicating they believe she is a superb investment right now.

The company acquired the rights to Bob Marley's estate in 2010, further suggesting these guys have an eye for a money-making name.

As a result of the acquisition, the coming months will witness the launch of a range of Monroe products, including handbags, lingerie and wine, which will only help bring Marilyn to the forefront of collectors' minds.

It's why investors are being urged to act now before prices go stratospheric.

Monroe collectibles, such as film-worn dresses and autographs, are already hotly contested among collectors and have a history of impressive value appreciation.

Last year Monroe's "subway dress" from The Seven Year Itch sold for $5.6m at auction.

It had last sold in 1971 for $400. That's a 27% pa rise in value over 40 years.

According to the PFC40 Autograph Index, Monroe's autograph has risen 7.82% pa in value since 2000. It is currently listed at £6,750 ($10,600).

In August, a baseball, lipstick-kissed and autographed by Monroe, and also signed by her baseball-star husband Joe DiMaggio and the 1952 New York Yankees team, sold for $59,750, almost tripling its $20,000 estimate.

We have a limited number of Marilyn Monroe autographs currently in stock, including a superb advertising slip for Monroe's first movie, Love Happy, signed by Monroe on the reverse.

The 1949 film was also notable for being the last Marx Brothers picture. Alongside Monroe's autograph is that of Harpo Marx's film double, who has appropriately signed "Double for Harpo".
