An antique model of the HMS Edward VII by Marklin realised $150,000 at Bertoia last month.
This model was produced in the early 1900s before the first world war – when the real HMS Edward VII was sunk by a sea mine.
Marklin is a high-end German toy company specialising in model trains.
It was founded in 1859 and has been at the forefront of the models market ever since.

Marklin ships are constructed from tinplate and outfitted with a clockwork motor. The level of detail on this specimen is typically excellent, with lifeboats, guns and cannon represented.
The auction house comments: “Its rarity and impeccable appearance made it the object of fierce competition”.
Despite the season, a Santa Claus and sleigh model achieved $60,000.
The piece is another excellent example of German craftsmanship, produced around the end of the 19th century.
Jeanne Bertoia, owner of Bertoia Auctions, said: “This was one of the great surprises of the sale.
“Christmas is traditionally one of our most popular categories with collectors, and there are many sophisticated buyers among those who attend our sales.
“Most knew how rare and special this piece was, but the $60,000 winning bid was still remarkable – it was more than triple the high estimate.
“It just goes to show how strong the market is for fine Christmas antiques.”
