The night before the assassination |
San Antonio resident Roy Botello has held some fascinating footage more or less a complete secret for nearly half a century.
A reel of 8mm silent film he shot on November 21, 1963 shows President John F Kennedy and his wife Jackie attending a LULAC event in Houston. Kennedy was gunned down the very next day.
Botello has finally contacted the Sixth Floor Museum in Dallas, which chronicles the Kennedy assassination to their enormous disbelief and excitement. Botello's belief that the film was nothing special and not really worth mentioning is surprising common.
As noted in the video above, a number of people can be seen taking photographs which have never yet come to light. The footage, taken at the Rice Hotel in Dallas, shows JFK and Jackie smiling as they greet guests in the grand ballroom.
Jackie stuns guests by speaking in Spanish without notes. The little, shaky video would be hugely valuable if it were ever on the open market, and its unceremonious reappearance reminds us of the accidental buying of an unknown Chaplin film on eBay in 2009.
