On June 6, 1966 the England manager gathered his 27-man squad for a training camp at the National Sports Centre in Lilleshall.
He wanted the players to focus, and his aim was simple:
To keep them away from the public, the press and the pub.
“If anybody gets the idea of popping out for a pint, and I find out, he is finished with this squad forever,” he warned them.

The training camp was gruelling, but it clearly did the job.
Ramsey whittled his squad down to 22 players, and when they left on June 18 they were fighting fit and ready to go.
They had also earned a well-deserved evening off.
So on June 20 the entire squad went to the boxing.
It was their first night out together.
And that's where today's special item comes in.
A big night out.
The England squad were guests of honour at an event hosted by the Anglo-American Sporting Club.
This is an original menu from that evening.
The players enjoyed dinner and four bouts, along with speeches by Alf Ramsey and TV personality David Frost.
And here's a great detail: the team was also toasted that night by sports commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme.
The same man who, just a few weeks later, would utter the immortal line “Some people are on the pitch! They think it's all over! It is now!”
